Mystique's romance with Nicolas Hoult's Beast never quite clicks either - even though the sequels insist on bringing it up - and by the time X-Men: Apocalypse came around, the actress seemed tired of the role. Lawrence is a great actress, but her insistence on spending as little screentime in Mystique's blue make-up as possible feels completely unlike the character and is a major issue. Jennifer Lawrence would become a breakout star during her run in the franchise, accounting for the character becoming more of a hero, to the point she's leading the team in X-Men: Apocalypse. Unfortunately, the character makes a quick exit in X-Men: The Last Stand, when she's 'cured' during a prison break and loses her powers, causing Magneto to abandon her. While Romjin's character isn't given the same development as Lawrence's Mystique, her entire world view and personality can be summed up in just tone line from X2 when Alan Cumming's Nightcrawler asks her why she doesn't just use her powers to blend in and live a normal life, she responds ' Because we shouldn't have to.' Romjin's Mystique is also shown to have fun with her villainy and enjoys playing mind games. She has little dialogue compared to Magneto, but there's no doubt she's just as much of a threat.

The character is much more interesting as a villain, and in the original X-Men trilogy, she is a cunning and calculating foe. Rebecca Romjin's version of Mystique is the best, however. Rebecca Romjin originated the role in the first movie, while Jennifer Lawrence inheriting the part from X-Men: First Class onwards. One of the franchise's most important recurring figures is Mystique, a shapeshifter capable of imitating anybody. Given the large roster of characters from the comics, some entries had difficulty finding uses for the likes of Havoc or Bishop. Sadly, X-Men: Dark Phoenix marked the end of the Fox era of the team, which proved to be a box-office dud, while spinoff The New Mutants remains trapped in limbo years after it finished filming. They suffered through duds like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but also highpoints like X-Men: First Class or Logan. Of course, X-Men 2 quickly followed and fans went through some serious high and low points throughout the course of the franchise.

The movie was also given a somewhat modest budget for a major blockbuster, with Fox uncertain of its success. The first movie had a tough time getting off the ground, with directors like Kathryn Bigelow and Paul W.S.

While 1998's Blade proved it was possible to take a lesser-known comic and make a great movie, it was the success of the original X-Men from 2000 that helped kickstart the modern-day obsession with comic book movies.

Rebecca Romjin's take on X-Men's Mystique is still the best.
